GREELEY -- Weld County sheriff's investigators asked for an arrest warrant in the murder investigation of former Brighton High School and Harlem Globetrotters' trainer Tom Bashline.
Bashline, 42, was shot to death in his Frederick home Nov. 4. His girlfriend found the body in the bathroom.
The suspect is a male, but his name hasn't been released because of the ongoing investigation. He is in custody on unrelated charges, according to Cmdr. Margie Martinez. Detectives were able to develop leads in the case from some items left in Bashline's vehicle, a Chevy S-10 pickup truck that the suspect stole.
"The investigation led detectives to identify a person of interest who is now in custody with no bond on unrelated charges," Martinez said.
Martinez was acquainted with the person of interest, though Martinez did not say how. For much of the past week, investigators have been working on the premise that the homicide was not a random act.
Martinez said Bashline picked up the person of interest earlier in the day in Longmont and went back to Bashline's home in the 7000 block of Weld County Road 11 in Frederick. Bashline was shot in the head with a semi-automatic handgun. Bashline's body was found about 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4. Martinez said the weapon has been recovered.
Bashline worked at BHS before joining the Globetrotters in 2010.
