FIRESTONE — During an Aug. 13 meeting, the Firestone Board of Trustees approved roadway paving projects to be undertaken in the coming months, including the final phase of expansion on Firestone Boulevard.
According to Firestone officials, travelers on Firestone Boulevard will be seeing roadwork “in full swing” by early September as crews work to add an additional lane in each direction between Birch and Cimarron streets.
The Firestone Boulevard expansion project was broken into two parts this past spring as original bids came in more than $400,000 over town estimates. The first phase completed earlier this month was utility work which lowered a water line and extended a box culvert and storm pipe on the south side of the road.
In addition to the widening of Firestone Boulevard, the town also approved bids for three additional paving projects:
• Frontier Street Overlay between Sable and Pine Cone avenues – Paid through the 1-percent sales tax increase;
• Park Avenue improvements, paid through Street Impact Fees; and
• Firestone Regional Sports Complex parking lot, paid through Parks Impact Fees.
Town officials cited high oil prices and a construction labor shortage as factors in a number of bids coming in higher than expected, which caused a delay in getting the work done as early as originally projected.
