Commissioners OK ban on sale, production of marijuana

-A A +A
By Gene Sears

Placing a limit on Weld County’s “right to farm,” one crop is off the table following a vote by Weld County commissioners.
The board moved forward Monday night with a ban on the growth, manufacturing and sale of marijuana in unincorporated areas of the county. The ban targets “marijuana cultivation facilities, marijuana product manufacturing facilities, marijuana testing facilities, and/or retail marijuana stores within the unincorporated area of Weld County,” according to the statute, which does not prohibit marijuana possession.
While Weld County voted by a slim overall margin to pass Amendment 64, the commission cited a precinct-by-precinct tally showing voters in the unincorporated areas against the measure.
The decision does not apply to cities and towns in the county.
