FREDERICK — Weld County District Attorney’s Office announced charges Dec. 10 against a Frederick woman alleging criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death.

According to a press release, Dione Warren, 32, turned herself in Dec. 9 on the class 3 felony charge.

Warren summoned emergency crews to her home in the 500 block of Pine Street the morning of Oct. 28 and reported finding her son, Sheine Steine, 3, lying on the ground in her bedroom, unresponsive and bleeding from the head, according to police and court records.

An autopsy ruled that the child had accidentally shot himself in the head with his stepfather’s gun.

The child found the gun between the mattress and frame of the bed after Warren left him home alone while she took her older daughter to school, according to the investigation.

Steine was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette where he was pronounced dead.

Steine’s stepfather, Jeremy McCollem, was not at home at the time of the shooting, according to Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour.

“We have no reason to believe this was other than an accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it,” Barbour said.

Barbour said the the firearm located near the child was a Glock, model 23, .40 caliber.
