Frederick police are investigating the Oct. 28 shooting death of a 3-year-old at a residence in town. An autopsy was completed today by the Weld County Coroner's Office, which found that the cause of death was due to an accidental gunshot wound to the head.
In a release to media, Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour identified the victim as Sheine Steine, the mother's name is Dione Warren and the step-father's name is Jeremy McCollem.
Barbour stated that McCollem was not home at home at the time of the shooting, but he is the owner of the firearm – a Glock model 23, .40 caliber – recovered by Frederick Police.
"We have no reason to believe this was other than an accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it," Barbour said.
Steine was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital yesterday where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m.
Barbour stated that the investigation into the circumstances of the traumatic injury continues.
"We are continuing to investigate and do the work required to bring this to conclusion," Barbour said. "Other questions will eventually be answered but those answers require more work."
