Parents were in the classroom, special speakers showed up to teach a lesson and support staff and schools saluted substitutes across the country the week of Nov. 14.
The 27J board of education decided to declare the week of Nov. 14 as American Education Week in tandem with the National Education Association and President Barack Obama.
The annual celebration is in its 90th year. It started as a way to generate public support for education after the NEA and American Legion recognized the amount of WWI draftees who were illiterate.
American Education Week honors students’ hard work, the dedication of teachers, support staff and other educators, and thanks parents and members of the community who help students succeed.
The president signed a proclamation saying, “Education has always been central to ensuring opportunity, and to instilling in all our citizens the defining American values of freedom, equality and respect for one another. Our nation’s schools can give students the tools, skills, and knowledge to participate fully in our democracy, and to succeed in college, career and life. This week, let us reaffirm the importance of education and recognize that we all share in the responsibility to educate our students.”
