Sheriff warns of growing rate of battery thefts

GREELEY — The Weld County Sheriff’s Office has seen a large increase in the number of property thefts since September, the majority of them involving motor vehicle batteries.
Several hundred batteries have been stolen to date throughout Weld County, most of them from semi trucks, heavy equipment or batteries stored in unsecured locations. Most reported thefts happen late at night or in early morning hours.
The sheriff’s office is asking the public to mark batteries in some way that they would be able to identify the battery as theirs. To help combat the thefts, vehicles should be parked in well lit areas and behind locked fences.
