Snow scrambles plans for area schools

-A A +A

FREDERICK -- Saturday's snowstorm forced some changes in the routine for Frederick High School and other schools in the St. Vrain Valley school system.

Frederick High School's season-opening track meet at Longmont High School was postponed. It could be made up later in the season. The state 2A regional basketball tournament at Frederick High School was pushed back to 1 p.m., March 10.

The Colorado High School Activities Association solo ensemble competition at Erie High School was called off and will be rescheduled at a later date. Saturday's dance at Frederick High School also was called off because of the weather.

An old-timers' wrestling tournament at Erie High School was postponed, too.

Sunday's In10sity National Dance Competition Tour is still on the calendar. Otherwise, scheduled events will not take place because of the storm.

The cause is the area's biggest snowstorm of the season. As of 9:30 Saturday morning, Frederick had an inch of snow on the ground and more on the way. Forecasters issued a blizzard warning for Frederick and the rest of Weld County in anticipation of almost a foot of snow and winds gusting to 40 mph.

Road conditions at mid-morning were far from ideal. But there were no area road closures. In fact, there was just one road closure in the metropolitan area because of the weather. CDOT reported snow and icy road conditions -- together with wind -- between Weld County and Fort Morgan.

We'll update during the day as necessary.
