Youth Commission hosts benefit dance

-A A +A

FREDERICK — Frederick’s Youth Commission hosted a successful Sadie Hawkins dance Feb. 4 that yielded 373 cans of food, 47 coats and $485 for the St. Theresa’s food bank.

More than 250 Frederick High School students danced the night away after making their donations for admission: 3 cans or $5 per ticket, or one gently used coat for two admissions.
“This whole event was really driven by the Youth Commissioners,” said Megan Williams, Frederick community relations specialist and liaison to the Youth Commission. “They came up with the idea to have a dance that was also a donation drive for coats and cans, they executed the publicity at the school and the Town is so proud of their efforts.”
It was also important to the students who make up the Youth Commission that the donations stayed in the Tri Town area, so they will be taking the donations to St. Theresa’s food bank themselves.
The Youth Commission was established to assess the needs of area youth and then formulate goals, guidelines and objectives to meet those needs. They establish special projects and solicit volunteers to help complete those projects, and act as a coordinating body in establishing youth service opportunities, special events and programs. The Youth Commission has eight members: Anthony Bixby, Brynn Burnham, Stephanie Garcia, Ginny Ritz-Creager, Amy Smith, Brett Sorenson, Tanner Todd and Rebecca Vincent.
