  • Weather service posts fire weather watch for Friday

    DENVER -- The National Weather Service posted a fire weather watch for Adams and Weld counties for Friday afternoon and evening.

    The cause is twofold. Strong winds, which mean very warm temperatures, and low relative humidities, could create extreme fire conditions, especially after noon. Winds could be as strong as 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 30 mph. The relative humidity levels could be as low as 9 percent.

  • Fired up 4 Food

        Mountain View Fire Rescue District’s third annual Fired Up 4 Food drive continues through May 20.
        The district and the Frederick-Firestone police department are accepting donations of food, which will be distributed to local food banks in the Carbon Valley, Erie, Niwot and Mead.

  • Charges filed against Reyes

        BRIGHTON — Adams County Assessor Gil Reyes has been charged with nine counts of misconduct relating to revised appraisals issued for properties owned by campaign contributors.
        The charges, announced Friday by Adams County District Attorney Don Quick, stem from allegations that Reyes lowered the taxable value of nine warehouses owned by Majestic Realty Co. The California-based company and officials at Majestic contributed $14,000 to Reyes’ electoral campaigns in 2002 and 2006.

  • Stricter monitoring ordered for Suncor

        DENVER —  Suncor Energy needs to do more monitoring work at its Commerce City refinery.
        So says the hazardous materials and waste management division of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment in an order issued May 9.

  • Rec district welcomes new board members

        FIRESTONE — Brenda Hall, Mike Schiers and Jeff Johnson are the newest members of the Carbon Valley Recreation District board. Voters elected those three to the board during the May 8 election.
        “Three board members — Bill Onstott, Sherri Lamb and Dennis Koolhof — will be leaving after completing a great service for the district with our thanks,” said CV Rec District Executive Director Renee Witty.

  • Drought mitigation plan presented to Board of Trustees

        FIRESTONE — The Firestone Board of Trustees was presented with a draft drought mitigation plan at the May 9 meeting. Should the town of Firestone’s water supply ever decrease below the 110 percent of demand, the board is considering that this plan be put into place.

  • Firestone, SAFEbuilt present 2012 scholarships

        Four local high school seniors were awarded scholarships at the May 9 Firestone Board of Trustees meeting.

  • Home sales up slightly in April

        The latest home-sale figures are in from Metrolist and IRES, and they show a slight increase from March to April.
