  • Weld County notices of valuation headed to a mailbox near you

        GREELEY — The Weld County Assessor began mailing Notices of Valuation (NOV) postcards to owners of real property May 1. The postcard notice provides the new actual value for 2013 which will be used in the calculation of property taxes to be paid in 2014.

        The detailed Notice of Valuation is posted online at www.weldgov.com under the Property Portal section.

  • Eighth annual fishing clinic shows kids the basics of angling

        FREDERICK — It should come as no surprise that at a gathering of fishermen there would be a disagreement on technique.

        “At this time of day, I’d recommend fishing without a bobber because the trout will be down near the bottom,” Chris Mettenbrink, wildlife manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, advised a crowd gathered for the eighth annual fishing clinic May 4 at Milavec Lake.

  • Cover the cough: Pertussis at 20-year high in Weld County schools

    A preventable disease is at a 20-year high in Weld County, with potentially fatal repercussions.

        Whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported in 15 Weld schools thus far, on the rise since 2012. An airborne illness, pertussis spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

  • Frederick mulls rules for backyard chickens

        FREDERICK — The town board reviewed elements of a draft resolution April 23 to allow town residents to own chickens at single-family residents.

        Jennifer Simmons briefed the town board on the options of regulating chicken ownership.

        “Before you is a very broad scope of regulation that would allow chickens to be kept within the town residential zones of R-E, R-1 and R-2, which are generally single-family zoning districts,” Simmons said.

  • Dacono voters get their say on marijuana ban

        DACONO — Dacono voters weighed in May 7 after press time about the fate of a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.

        Dacono city council voted June 11 last year to ban all medical marijuana dispensaries by Dec. 31, 2012.

        The ban was prompted by city concerns about liability against staff due to the difference between state and federal laws on the possession and regulation of medical marijuana.

  • Frederick track teams finish in middle at Weld County Championships

    Frederick took to the track at Friday’s Weld County Championships at District 6 Stadium in Greeley. The girls team was 10th and the boys team finished 12th.

    The girls 4-by-200-meter relay team — Marin Downs, Allyson Reid, Emily Echelberger and Jordan Sleeth —  captured first place in a time of 1:50.23. Individually, Jordan Sleeth was third in the girls 200-meter dash. Her time was 27.02 seconds. 

    Joe Wise wound up second in the 400-meter dash (51.17 seconds) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.1 seconds).
     

  • Warriors baseball team think they've turned corner despite two one-run losses

        FREDERICK — Frederick’s baseball lost a pair of one-run games to rival Mead High School last week. Even so, the Warriors think things are getting better.

        “We’re starting to gel a little bit,” FHS coach Ted Clapp said. “We’re looking much more like a team. We’re playing much better. Our attitudes are better. We think we turned a corner.”

  • Frederick's Broz enters derby for Sunbelt Classic Baseball Tournament

        FREDERICK — Frederick’s Michael Broz could put in for some serious frequent driver mileage.

        He was the starting pitcher in the Warriors’ extra-inning loss at Mead Saturday morning. Then he high-tailed it to Parker for a tryout to join some of the state’s top high school juniors to represent Colorado in the Sunbelt Classic tournament in Oklahoma. His teammate, Jaron Balman, participated in the tournament a year ago.
