  • A ‘finger’ on our own pulse

I didn’t see the errant middle finger thrown during this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
I was in the kitchen washing dishes as should any red-blooded American male during halftime of the year’s biggest sporting event.
Needless to say, I was surprised come Monday morning by the outrage that sprung up. It forced me to scurry home to summon up my DVR’ed telecast of the game and relive singer M.I.A.’s vulgar outburst.

  • Some notes about the upcoming election season

Election season is fast approaching for many with April 3 as election day for statutory towns.
Frederick is anticipating a lively election process with four positions open, including mayor and three trustee positions.
Come learn more about the process for the election, as well as what it takes to be a trustee or the mayor, at a special evening planned by the town of Frederick, Feb. 9, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the board room at Town Hall, 401 Locust St.

  • Rec center sets record for membership sales

The Carbon Valley Recreation Center had a record month in annual membership sales as well program attendance. It seems like all the new programs that the facility is offering for both adults and children are a hit. Everyone loves the new “Rec Buc” program. It is always exciting to start to programs and benefits to help make the Carbon Valley Recreation Center an even better place to visit on a daily basis. All the staff hopes this trend continues throughout 2012.

  • Our own worst enemies

I think there’s some irony in the hydraulic fracturing debate going on in Commerce City.
For those not keeping tabs on this issue, residents have voiced their concerns over what chemicals are being pumped into the ground as part of the hydraulic fracturing process and the impact those chemicals may have on the environment, especially groundwater.

  • Divorce delay bill still has merit

Ah, the agony of a weekly newspaper.
Stories often come to life and die
all in the bookends of a week.
That was certainly the case for one state legislator’s controversial bill that would have instituted a so-called “cooling-off” period for parents considering divorce.

  • Membership drive paying off for rec district

2012 has started with a bang at the Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District.  The 15 percent off annual passes through Jan. 31 has been a big hit, as well as the new incentives of “Rec Bucks,” new youth and family fitness classes that are now part of the membership and, of course, free childcare.  The staff at the district is always trying to find ways to make memberships worthwhile and cost effective.

  • 2012 brings much to look forward to

As we open 2012, I would like to reflect on 2011 as well as challenges and opportunities our community will face in the new year.
I have been very fortunate to serve our community as mayor for eight years. We have grown, matured, ventured out and had some missteps. But, overall, we are a stronger, better managed and forward thinking community.

  • Guilt by Accusation

Accusations are powerful. The most powerful of those are sexual assault allegations, and for someone in a position of responsibility or trust, allegations involving children are by far the most devastating. Case in point: former Fort Lupton track coach and teacher Ray Brown. Brought up on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust as a pattern of abuse, Brown found himself in the court of public opinion from day one, over a full year before his actual day in court.

  • Take the phone away before somebody gets hurt

The first key to getting help is admitting you have a problem.
So, last week’s’ recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board of an all-out ban on the use of mobile devices in cars is a really good place to start.
I’m Kevin and I’m addicted to using my cell phone in my car.

  • Carbon Valley Rec Center looks ahead to new year

2012 is almost upon us and the Carbon Valley Recreation District is ready to bring in the New Year.
Breakfast with Santa had an excellent turn out even though it was freezing outside. The new winter holiday camp registration is a great success with many parents registering their kids.
