Dacono voters get their say on...

    DACONO — Dacono voters weighed in May 7 after press time about the fate of a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.

    Dacono city council voted June 11 last year to ban all medical marijuana dispensaries by Dec. 31, 2012.

    The ban was prompted by city concerns about liability against staff due to the difference between state and federal laws on the possession and regulation of medical marijuana.

Frederick mulls rules for...

    FREDERICK — The town board reviewed elements of a draft resolution April 23 to allow town residents to own chickens at single-family residents.

    Jennifer Simmons briefed the town board on the options of regulating chicken ownership.

    “Before you is a very broad scope of regulation that would allow chickens to be kept within the town residential zones of R-E, R-1 and R-2, which are generally single-family zoning districts,” Simmons said.

Weld County notices of valuation...

    GREELEY — The Weld County Assessor began mailing Notices of Valuation (NOV) postcards to owners of real property May 1. The postcard notice provides the new actual value for 2013 which will be used in the calculation of property taxes to be paid in 2014.

Cover the cough: Pertussis at 20...

A preventable disease is at a 20-year high in Weld County, with potentially fatal repercussions.

    Whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported in 15 Weld schools thus far, on the rise since 2012. An airborne illness, pertussis spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

    FREDERICK — It should come as no surprise that at a gathering of fishermen there would be a disagreement on technique.

    “At this time of day, I’d recommend fishing without a bobber because the trout will be down near the bottom,” Chris Mettenbrink, wildlife manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, advised a crowd gathered for the eighth annual fishing clinic May 4 at Milavec Lake.

DACONO — A safe motorcycle driver has a good eye for traffic, which also happens to be a handy skill for an entrepreneur looking for a place to set up shop.
    That’s what brought Kelly Auker and her Brick House Leather Company to Dacono and a new storefront at 204 Eighth St., Unit A.
    Auker moved her four-year-old business May 4 from Longmont to bring her seamstress skills for custom-made leather apparel and accessories to a larger market.

Voters roll back Dacono pot ban

DACONO — In a special May 7 election, voters reversed the city’s ban on medical marijuana dispensaries, allowing three to reopen in Dacono.
    Dispensary owners hoped for such an outcome after council voted June 11 last year to ban all medical marijuana dispensaries by Dec. 31, 2012.

State track qualifiers include...

AURORA — Two members of Frederick’s track team earned spots in this week’s state 4A track meet at Jeffco Stadium. Both qualified in two events.
    Joe Wise was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. He set his qualifying time at the Frederick WarBird Invitational in April at 38.74 seconds. He’s also 14th in the field in the high jump. He set his qualifying mark of 6 feet 2 inches at the Warriors’ Pow Wow meet in mid-March.

Baseball skills clinic May 18

The Carbon Valley Recreation Center hosts a baseball skill camp from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 18, at the Firestone Sports Complex.
