Youth tennis registration ends May 25

    Registration for the Carbon Valley Recreation Center’s Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics youth tennis team ends May 25. The program lasts four weeks, and the fee is $35 for residents and $42 for nonresidents. Call 303-833-3660.

College track

    GOLDEN — Former Frederick track performer Alexa Urban finished fourth in the women’s 800-meter run at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships.
    Urban, who is a junior at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, turned in a time of 2:14.25. She’s provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II national track and field meet in this event.

Alfonso R. Moya

    Alfonso R. Moya, 53, of Brighton, passed away April 27, 2013, in Brighton. He was born Jan. 12, 1960, in Denver, to Alfonso and Patricia (Torres) Moya. He graduated from Denver West High School in 1978.

Brick House Leather opens Dacono shop

DACONO — A safe motorcycle driver has a good eye for traffic, which also happens to be a handy skill for an entrepreneur looking for a place to set up shop.
    That’s what brought Kelly Auker and her Brick House Leather Company to Dacono and a new storefront at 204 Eighth St., Unit A.
    Auker moved her four-year-old business May 4 from Longmont to bring her seamstress skills for custom-made leather apparel and accessories to a larger market.

Ada Devine Dunham

    Ada Devine Dunham, 100, passed away on April 30, 2013, at the Manor Care Center in Boulder. She was born Oct. 31, 1912, on a farm near Erie to Lewis and Lela (Robinson) Davis. She lived her entire life in the Brighton area where she met and married her husband, Leo Dunham, in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1984. They had three children: Sam (Carma) Dunham of Brighton, Clara (Jack) Benson of Flowery Branch, GA. and Betty Dunham of Northglenn; seven grand children and 13 great grand children.

Three candidates vie for Weld sheriff job

With former Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez-Perusek’s entry into the race, the election for Weld County sheriff now becomes a three-way affair.
    Martinez-Perusek, who hopes to become the first female sheriff in Weld County’s history, retired in March after 34 years with the county. Martinez-Perusek served as Weld’s first female undersheriff from 2003 to 2011.

Cover the cough: Pertussis at 20-year high in Weld County schools

A preventable disease is at a 20-year high in Weld County, with potentially fatal repercussions.

    Whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported in 15 Weld schools thus far, on the rise since 2012. An airborne illness, pertussis spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
