  • Rockies Skills Challenge is June 18
        This year’s Colorado Rockies Skills Challenge runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m., June 18, at the Firestone Sports Complex. It’s free.     No registration is necessary. The event is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 13. Participants cannot wear cleats or turf shoes. Call 303-833-3660.  
  • Youth tennis registration ends May 25
        Registration for the Carbon Valley Recreation Center’s Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics youth tennis team ends May 25. The program lasts four weeks, and the fee is $35 for residents and $42 for nonresidents. Call 303-833-3660.
  • Baseball skills clinic May 18
    The Carbon Valley Recreation Center hosts a baseball skill camp from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 18, at the Firestone Sports Complex.       It’s open to boys and girls 7 to 14 years of age. Call 303-833-3660.
  • Face-lift coming to rec center
    The weight room and the cardio room floors at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center will be getting a facelift for three days, starting April 29.     Equipment will be moved out of the rooms and put into one half of the gymnasium. In its place will be new flooring to bring the facility into compliance with federal disability laws.     Facility coordinator Dominic Martinez said the work begins April 29 when the facility is closed.
  • Colorado Swim Academy settles into its new digs

Pfannenstiel Contributing writer     FREDERICK — Since the Colorado Swim Academy’s meager beginning in the summer of 2003, coach Jay Weerman and his team have proven their determination to succeed and their commitment to the sport of competitive swimming.     In the past 10 years, the C.S.A. developed from a tiny, three-person team into a U.S.A.-qualified youth squad of more than 30 highly focused athletes.
  • Swim program calls Carbon Valley home
        FREDERICK – The Carbon Valley Recreation Center has been home to the Colorado Swim Academy since January.     CSA has more than 25 swimmers ranging in age from 7 to 16. Younger swimmers swim at the rec center at 6 p.m. Mondays and a5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The older swimmers practice in Thornton at 5 a.m.
  • CARA track registration underway through May 25
        The Carbon Valley Recreation Center is taking registrations for its Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics youth track program for 5- to 16-year-olds. The deadline is May 25.     The program is an introduction for youngsters to learn the basics of track and field. Practices start in June and will be at the former Frederick High School track.     The fee is $65 for residents and $78 for nonresidents. Call 303-833-3660.
  • Carbon Valley preps for new half-marathon
    Katelyn Clark-Martin Contributing writer     FREDERICK — Anyone who asks Brenda Ridgley, event organizer about the May 18 Carbon Valley Half Marathon, Corporate Challenge Relay and Fun Run can sense the excitement and passion in her voice.     “We’re really hoping to make this a fun family event,” she said.     The half-marathon benefits autism research through Children’s Hospital in Aurora. In addition to the race entertainment will be present.

  • Girls softball sign-ups close March 16
        Girls softball registration at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center closes March 16.     It costs $65 for residents and $78 for nonresidents interested in the 8-and-under coach-pitch program. The fee for the 10-, 12- 14- and 18-and-under leagues is $75 for residents and $90 for nonresidents. Ages are as of Jan. 1. Call 303-833-3660 with questions.
